  • Age Spots

Age spots, also known as brown spots, liver spots and solar lentigines, are a common sign of aging. Flat, oval areas of pigmentation, age spots tend to appear on parts of the body, such as the face, hands, arms, shoulders and feet, that are exposed to the sun. Most common in people older than 40, they can be freckle-sized or more than a half-inch in length, and range in color from light brown to black. When age spots are grouped together, they appear even larger. CAUSES OF AGE SPOTS Although age spots are usually caused by accumulated exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light, they may also be the result of using tanning beds/lamps; trauma or injury; or genetic predisposition. People with light skin are more likely to develop age spots, as are those with a history of frequent sunburn or sun exposure. DIAGNOSIS OF AGE SPOTS True age spots are harmless and do not require treatment. If what is thought to be an age spot appears irregular, however, a biopsy may be performed to ensure that it is not malignant. Spots with the following characteristics should be evaluated by a physician: Dark pigmentation Unusual combination of colors Rapidly increasing in size In addition, spots that are itchy, red or sensitive, or that bleed, should be checked for malignancy. TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR AGE SPOTS Although age spots are not medically dangerous, many people who develop them find them aesthetically unappealing. Treatments to remove age spots or make them less prominent include the following: Liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy) Bleaching creams Microdermabrasion Laser skin resurfacing Chemical peels Treatment of age spots is considered strictly cosmetic, so insurance companies typically do not cover procedures to remove them. PREVENTION OF AGE SPOTS To prevent age spots or keep them from worsening, avoiding prolonged sun exposure and regularly using a broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) sunscreen is recommended. Wearing UV-blocking clothing and a broad-brimmed hat will provide additional protection.

  • Body and Facial Hair Transplants

Body and facial hair transplants are the most permanent solution to problems of body and facial hair loss. Such procedures can provide relief from the distress caused when hair is lost from places on the face or body where it normally grows. For some individuals, disguising hair loss with wigs or hairpieces may be a good solution, but many patients desire a more permanent solution. There are a number of treatments available to help promote hair growth or hide hair loss, but the most effective treatment, with the most lasting results, is often hair transplantation surgery. Hair loss can occur as a result of aging, heredity, medications or underlying medical conditions, and can affect men and women of all ages. Aside from affecting the hair on the head, hair loss may leave bald areas, patchy spots or thinned hair on the face or body. Depending on the gender of the patient, hair loss may be more or less troublesome when it occurs in the beard area, chest, armpits, eyebrows, eyelashes or pubic region. Any noticeable hair loss may cause embarrassment, self-consciousness and even serious emotional distress to patients who suffer from it. Since most insurance companies consider hair transplantation a cosmetic procedure, however, though expensive, hair transplantation is rarely covered by insurance. REASONS FOR BODY AND FACIAL HAIR TRANSPLANTS The loss of hair on the face or body can be caused by a number of different factors, including: Disorders of the thyroid or pituitary glands Hormone deficiencies Certain medications Cancer treatments Nutritional deficiencies Some skin or immune disorders Traumatic stress Hair loss may be the result of alopecia areata, a condition of unknown origin believed to be an immune disorder, in which a problem with the follicles causes hair to stop growing and fall out, or a disorder known as telogen effluvium, in which a large section of hair goes into a resting phase, stops growing, falling out all at once, or trichotillomania, a psychiatric disorder in which a patient compulsively pulls out facial or body hair. THE TRANSPLANT PROCEDURE Beginning in the 1950s, doctors began experimenting with the transplantation of hair. In the early procedures, strips of the scalp were removed and transplanted to balding areas. In modern, perfected procedures, the strips of hair removed are carefully divided into individual follicles, usually between one and four follicles, and inserted individually into tiny surgical openings on the bare patches of the targeted area. During hair transplant, the donor and the recipient are the same individual. Donor hair to be used for transplantation is harvested from a discreet area of the scalp. It is removed from portions of the head, typically at the back and sides, that are considered permanent safe zones because they are unaffected by hair loss. Once the hair is removed and divided into follicular portions, the transplants are made individually. The precise amount of hair that needs to be taken from the head will be determined by the location to which it is being transplanted and the size of the area that needs coverage. Accuracy is essential, as these hairs will be transplanted one by one and positioned in a natural direction of growth. The hair grafts will continue to grow normally in their new location. A hair transplantation procedure takes between four and ten hours to perform, depending on the extent of the coverage required. Usually one session is sufficient, though sometimes additional sessions may be required. RECOVERY FROM BODY AND FACIAL HAIR TRANSPLANTS Patients who have undergone body or facial hair transplantation should expect some soreness, swelling, itching, crusting, and possible numbness at both the donor and recipient sites. Pain medication, either over-the-counter or prescribed, may be administered to lessen discomfort. Normal activities can usually be resumed after 24 hours, though symptoms may not completely subside for a week to 10 days. The results of this procedure appear gradually as the transplanted hair falls out and then regrows to restore a natural appearance. The incisions will fade over time to become less noticeable as well. Desired results are usually achieved after approximately 6 months, although this varies from patient to patient. The number of procedures needed depends on the extent of hair loss, as well as the patient's physical characteristics and goals for treatment. For some patients, a single session may be all that's needed, while others will require more. The doctor will determine how many treatments are needed to suit individual needs. Within 2 to 3 weeks after surgery, the transplanted hair will fall out, but within the next few months new hair growth will appear. Within a period of 6 to 9 months, most patients will have attained 60 percent of their new hair growth.

  • Body Waxing

Body waxing is a convenient and effective method to remove unwanted facial or body hair. While not a permanent fix, waxing lasts much longer than shaving or using depilatories, since during this process hair is removed from the root. Waxing is frequently used as a successful means of removing unwanted hair from the eyebrows, upper lip, chin, underarms, legs, back, and bikini area. The treated area usually remains smooth and hairless for 4 to 6 weeks. CANDIDATES FOR BODY WAXING Almost anyone with unwanted hair is a candidate for body waxing, though the individual must be prepared to experienced some discomfort or pain during the process. Individual sensitivities vary so some people tolerate waxing on certain parts of their body more easily than others. Whenever the skin is in an unusually sensitive condition, body waxing should be avoided since in such situations the skin is more prone to "lifting," meaning that the top layer of the skin can be torn away during the waxing process. Because of this, individuals in the following categories are not good candidates for body waxing: Those taking blood thinners or corticosteroids Those who have psoriasis, eczema or rosacea Those with autoimmune diseases, like lupus Those who are sunburned, have infections or cold sores Those with severe varicose veins Those who have undergone recent laser treatment Those who have undergone recent chemical peels TYPES OF BODY WAXING PROCEDURES There are two basic types of body waxing procedures: strip waxing and strip-less waxing. STRIP WAXING During strip waxing, a thin layer of soft wax is spread over the area and a cloth or paper strip is applied and pressed firmly. The goal is to have the strip adhere to the wax and the wax adhere to the skin so that when the strip is quickly pulled off against the direction of hair growth, the hair is effectively removed. If the process is performed carefully, although there is brief pain involved, skin trauma is minimized and bruising, ingrown hairs and broken capillaries are avoided. STRIP-LESS WAXING During strip-less waxing, a hard wax is applied to the skin in a thick layer and no cloth or paper strips are employed. When the wax cools and hardens, it is easily removed. Since during the strip-less method of body waxing the wax does not adhere as tightly to the skin as during strip waxing, this process if a better option for individuals with sensitive skin and finer hairs. It is also a less painful method of body waxing. After both strip waxing and strip-less waxing, a soothing lotion is applied to the skin to minimize discomfort. Although the treated hairs are completely removed and will not regrow for many weeks, not every hair is growing at the same time. The waxing process may have to be repeated in order to remove hairs that were in a dormant state during the first treatment. BENEFITS OF BODY WAXING There are several benefits to body waxing over other methods of body hair removal. Waxing is more effective than some other hair removal treatments because: Large amounts of hair can be removed at one time Waxing lasts for a relatively long time, 4 to 8 weeks Regrowth of hair is softer than after shaving or depilatory use Pain or discomfort lessens as treatments become routine COMPLICATIONS OF BODY WAXING Probably the biggest drawback to body waxing is the pain involved, although for most individuals the end results are well worth the discomfort. While short-lived, the stinging or burning can be intense, especially if the waxing is administered to sensitive areas of the body. It is very important that an experienced, licensed technician perform the body waxing since proper technique and careful sanitation is essential to maintain health and avoid infection. Even when waxing is performed with care, it is possible for red bumps, minor bleeding or bruising. or ingrown hairs to result, although these conditions are usually easily resolved. Such complications are most likely to occur during the primary waxing, especially on areas where hair growth is thick.

  • Brow and Lash Tint

Undefined eyebrows and eyelashes can fail to accentuate the natural beauty of the eyes. Many women with light colored eye brows and eye lashes may wish to add a darker accent to their faces to highlight their eyes and other features. Tinting can add depth to the entire structure of the face for those with pale or light colored skin and very blonde or light brows and lashes. By matching the tint to the individual's natural look, brow and lash tinting can create a new look to the face without looking artificial. Eyebrow and eyelash tinting adds the illusion of thickness and dimension by simply changing the color. The eyes will suddenly appear more vibrant and the features will have more contrast. Before tinting the eyelashes, the aesthetician applies a protective cream, such as petroleum jelly under the eyes, which prevents the skin from getting stained. A cotton pad is then placed under the eyes and over the cream. As the patient shuts her eyes, the tint is applied to lashes with a fine brush, and allowed to set for at least ten minutes. To tint the eyebrows, the aesthetician will also first apply petroleum jelly the skin surrounding the brows. This protects the skin and prevents the dye from bleeding onto it. Then the tint is painted directly onto the brow. The dye sits for ten minutes, and any residue is gently removed. The results of permanent tints can last from one to three months. To help eye brow color last longer, individuals are advised to avoid using exfoliating cleansers, which can strip the color from the hair in the brows.

  • Medical Pedicure

A medical pedicure promotes overall foot and nail wellness in addition to enhancing the appearance of the toes. This procedure is often recommended for patients with corns, calluses or other minor foot conditions who may require more intensive treatment than a traditional pedicure. Medical pedicures are becoming increasingly popular at nail salons, spas and podiatric offices and are often performed on patients with diabetes, vascular disease or rheumatoid arthritis, who may be at an increased risk for recurring foot ailments and are looking for a safe and healthy maintenance treatment. Medical pedicures may help to treat or prevent such conditions as: Athlete's foot Cracked heels Corns and calluses Ingrown toenails During a medical pedicure, the feet are cleansed with an anti-bacterial solution and gently exfoliated to help remove dry or dead skin. Depending on the needs and preferences of each patient, treatment may also include a glycolic peel, microdermabrasion or detoxing techniques such as massage. In some cases, buffers, pumice stones or electric files may be used to treat problem areas and soften the feet. Medical pedicure technicians can help to increase circulation to the feet, through massage and stimulation to the reflexology pressure points on the feet. Medical pedicures are a much more thorough treatment than traditional pedicures and may take up to two hours to perform. Medical pedicures offer a reduced risk of fungal and bacterial infections because of their extremely sterile practices, and patients leave feeling healthy and refreshed. It is important for patients to note that while a medical pedicure is effective in improving the overall condition of the feet and even treating certain minor conditions, it is not an adequate substitute for professional podiatric care and cannot effectively replace medical treatment.

  • Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive skin-exfoliation procedure designed to treat sun damage, scars, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. In addition to its cosmetic benefits, microdermabrasion helps to enhance circulation and lymph flow. Results are immediately visible, and there is no downtime for the patient, who can immediately resume regular activities. Performed in-office, microdermabrasion does not require anesthesia, and can be combined with other procedures such as chemical peels or laser treatment. Microdermabrasion is a much less invasive procedure than dermabrasion, which is used to treat more serious skin problems. Dermabrasion, in which several layers of skin are removed, is considered a surgical treatment. THE MICRODERMABRASION PROCEDURE During the microdermabrasion procedure, which is usually performed by an aesthetician, a handheld device is used to transmit tiny crystals of aluminum oxide across the targeted treatment area. The crystals and dead skin are then suctioned away with a vacuum tool, revealing fresh underlying skin. A treatment session can last from five to 60 minutes. The results of a single microdermabrasion treatment are temporary. For continued improvement, treatment should be repeated every 2 to 4 weeks. RISKS OF MICRODERMABRASION Microdermabrasion is considered safe for all skin types, and is appropriate for Asian and dark-skinned patients who may be at risk for skin discoloration with other types of treatment. There are no serious risks associated with microdermabrasion, although some patients experience mild redness and irritation, and patients older than 70 may have a slightly escalated risk of bruising and skin abrasions. Avoiding sun exposure after microdermabrasion is important because it may have removed some of the skin's natural protection. In patients who have a history of cold sores, undergoing microdermabrasion may reactivate the virus that causes them. In those cases, avoiding treatment around the lip area and/or taking preventative antiviral medication prior to treatment may be recommended.

  • Permanent Makeup

Permanent makeup, also known as micropigmentation or cosmetic tattooing, is a cosmetic technique that uses dye or pigment that is permanently injected into the skin to resemble makeup or conceal imperfections. Permanent makeup can improve a person's appearance in a variety of ways, that may include: Enhancing features such as the eyebrow, eyelashes and lip Concealing scars or blemishes Camouflaging areas of uneven pigmentation All of these enhancements can be accomplished without the need for daily makeup applications. This procedure is FDA-approved and produces successful results for a wide range of cosmetic goals. Permanent makeup is quickly becoming a popular, convenient treatment for patients with minor cosmetic concerns. In some cases, permanent makeup is used to improve the appearance of a nipple after breast reconstruction. The results of this procedure are long-lasting and any fading can be addressed with with minor touch-up treatments. CANDIDATES FOR PERMANENT MAKEUP Micropigmentation can be used for all skin types, and can be used to enhance the patient's natural appearance or improve the appearance of scars and other skin imperfections. For most patients, permanent makeup serves as a way to save time in their daily schedule. It may also be used on individuals whose ability to wear regular makeup is hindered by an allergy or other medical condition. This may include patients whose skin is easily irritated by most forms of traditional makeup, patients with arthritis and other painful conditions who have difficulty applying makeup, and those who have suffered hair loss on the eyebrows, sideburns or hair line. PERMANENT MAKEUP PROCEDURE FDA-approved, allergy-tested dyes are made of mineral extracts and can be tinted to match the patient's skin tone as closely as possible. Individuals can choose the specific color, shade and intensity of dye for a completely customized procedure. After the application of a topical anesthesia, the dyes are injected into the skin using micro-needles. The procedure may last as little as 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. Patients can return home shortly after the procedure. The application of permanent makeup may cause mild discomfort. Ice packs can be used after treatment to reduce any pain or swelling, and antibiotic ointment may be applied to help prevent infection. Complications are rare but may include infection or allergic reactions to the dye. PERMANENT MAKEUP RESULTS The results of the permanent makeup application are visible immediately, although more than one session may be required for larger areas or touch-ups. Most patients can achieve their desired results after two treatment sessions spaced one to two weeks apart. Aging and long-term sun exposure may lead to a reduction in color strength that may require touch-up treatments in order to maintain the original results. If removal of permanent makeup is desired, a laser procedure similar to tattoo removal may be performed, in order to remove pigmentation from the skin and restore the patient's original appearance.

  • Spider Veins

Spider veins (telangiectasias) are small, thin blood vessels visible beneath the skin. They usually develop on the face or legs, and may look like a series of thin tree branches or strands of a spider web. Although most spider veins are only a cosmetic issue, for some people they can cause uncomfortable symptoms such as aching, burning, swelling and leg-cramping. Spider veins are extremely common, affecting nearly half of the adult population of the United States. Many patients are bothered when spider veins develop on prominent areas such as the legs or face, and seek treatment to eliminate them. Many spider-vein treatments are highly effective and minimally invasive, offering aesthetically pleasing results without painful or lengthy downtime. CAUSES OF AND RISK FACTORS FOR SPIDER VEINS Spider veins develop from a backflow of blood in the veins. This condition, which results from damaged valves in the veins, is called "venous reflux." As blood collects in these veins, their walls distend. This increases the size of the veins, and makes them visible under the surface of the skin. Risk factors for developing spider veins include the following: Increasing age Hormonal changes Pregnancy Obesity Lack of exercise Sun exposure Having a family history of spider veins is also a risk factor for developing them. DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF SPIDER VEINS Spider veins, which are diagnosed through a physical examination of the patient, an analysis of symptoms and, sometimes, diagnostic ultrasound, can be treated in a number of ways, all of which are minimally invasive. COMPRESSION STOCKINGS The simplest solution for treating spider veins is for the patient to wear compression stockings, which put pressure on the affected veins and promote blood flow back to the heart. This method is designed to control the symptoms of spider veins, not remove them. SCLEROTHERAPY Sclerotherapy involves injecting a sclerosant, a solution designed to collapse them, into the veins. This procedure is performed in a doctor's office. Each treatment takes approximately one hour, and a typical patient requires two to four treatments. ENDOVENOUS LASER TREATMENT Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT), which is also called "laser ablation," consists of inserting a catheter with a laser probe attached to it directly into the vein. The laser heat seals off the damaged vein, and diverts blood flow to healthier vessels. The above treatments have fewer side effects, cause less pain and have shorter recovery times than traditional surgical-vein-removal procedures. PREVENTION OF SPIDER VEINS Although there is no sure way to prevent spider veins, making certain lifestyle changes may reduce the risk of developing them. Lifestyle changes include losing weight, exercising regularly, and wearing support stockings and comfortable, flat shoes. It is also important to move the legs frequently, especially during long periods of sitting or standing in one place.

  • BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription drug that, when injected, temporarily paralyzes muscles. It contains a purified and safe form of botulinum toxin A, which is produced by the microbe that causes botulism. Manufactured by Allergan, Inc., it is used to treat permanent furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin that are formed by the continual contraction of facial muscles. In addition to its cosmetic applications, it is used to treat a number of medical problems, including excessive sweating, overactive bladder, neck spasms, crossed eyes, chronic back and jaw pain, and migraines. APPLICATIONS FOR BOTOX COSMETIC Although originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of eye and muscle spasms, BOTOX Cosmetic was quickly recognized for its cosmetic value. Properly placed injections of BOTOX Cosmetic block nerve impulses sent to muscles, weakening them to the point where they cannot contract, and temporarily eliminating moderately severe furrows and lines. BOTOX Cosmetic is used to treat the following: Forehead furrows Frown lines Crow's feet Skin bands on the neck According to Allergan, BOTOX Cosmetic has been "extensively researched, with approximately 2500 studies." BOTOX COSMETIC PROCEDURE AND RESULTS Using a very fine needle, BOTOX Cosmetic is injected directly into facial muscles that are causing furrows and lines. Receiving the injections requires no anesthetic, but some doctors choose to numb the area to be injected with ice packs or a topical anesthetic cream. Results can usually be seen within a few days of treatment, and typically last up to four months, although areas that are treated on a regular basis may retain results longer. Injections should be given only by qualified medical professionals. SIDE EFFECTS OF BOTOX COSMETIC Injection-site side effects of BOTOX Cosmetic are usually mild and temporary, and include the following: Pain Infection Inflammation Tenderness Swelling Redness Bleeding Bruising Normal activities may be resumed immediately after receiving injections.

  • Dysport®

Prescription Dysport® injectable is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment for temporarily lessening or eliminating moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Like BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport injectable is placed directly into the muscle underneath a furrow, weakening the muscle to the point where it cannot contract. Dysport, also known as Reloxin, is made from a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum; it is the same neurotoxin used in BOTOX Cosmetic. APPLICATIONS FOR DYSPORT INJECTABLE Medically, Dysport injectable is used to treat excessive underarm sweating; symptoms of cervical dystonia, which include neck pain and abnormal head position; and muscle spasms. Cosmetically, Dysport injections are used to treat the following: Forehead furrows Frown lines Crow's feet Skin bands on the neck DYSPORT INJECTABLE PROCEDURE AND RESULTS Using a very fine needle, Dysport injectable is placed directly into facial muscles that are causing furrows and lines. No anesthetic is required, but some doctors choose to numb the area to be injected with ice packs or a topical anesthetic cream. Results can usually be seen within a few days of treatment, and typically last up to 4 months, although areas that are treated on a regular basis may retain results longer. Injections should be given only by qualified medical professionals. CANDIDATES FOR DYSPORT INJECTABLE According to the manufacturer's website, candidates for Dysport injectable are "adults less than 65 years of age" who want "temporary improvement in the look of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines)." It may not be suitable for those with the following: Allergies to Dysport injectable or its ingredients An allergy to cow's milk protein Surgical facial changes Very weak muscles in the treatment area A face that looks very different on each side Inflammation or infection in the area to be injected Droopy eyelids or sagging eyelid folds Deep facial scars Thick, oily skin Wrinkles that cannot be smoothed when spread apart Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, or has a neuromuscular disease, should not receive Dysport injectable. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DYSPORT INJECTABLE AND BOTOX COSMETIC Although made from the same bacterium, there is anecdotal evidence that Dysport injectable may last longer, spread farther and take effect more quickly than BOTOX Cosmetic. SIDE EFFECTS OF DYSPORT INJECTABLE Side effects of Dysport injectable are usually mild and temporary, and normal activities may be resumed immediately after receiving injections. Injection-site side effects include the following: Pain Infection Inflammation Tenderness Swelling Redness Bleeding Bruising Eyelids can droop when Dysport injections are made in the glabellar region; they usually return to normal within 3 weeks. Side effects of Dysport injectable are the same as those of BOTOX Cosmetic.

  • JUVÉDERM®

JUVÉDERM® XC injectable gel is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved dermal filler that, according to its manufacturer, Allergan, Inc., is designed to "temporarily treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds" in people older than 21. Unlike the original JUVÉDERM injectable gel, JUVÉDERM XC is infused with lidocaine to make its injection more comfortable. JUVÉDERM XC is a smooth-consistency gel that restores volume to the skin, and smooths away moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. It is made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a sugar that occurs naturally in the body. In terms of the skin, HA's role is to deliver nutrients and hydration, and act as a cushioning agent. Young, healthy skin contains a lot of HA, but factors that include aging and sun exposure reduce the amount, causing skin to lose structure and volume. JUVÉDERM XC is most effective in improving the appearance of nasolabial folds, the lines that run from the bottom of the nose to the corner of the mouth on both sides of the face. JUVÉDERM XC INJECTABLE GEL PROCEDURE JUVÉDERM XC injections take about 15 minutes to administer in a doctor's office. A fine needle is used for the injection, which is given under the skin in the targeted area to add volume or fill in wrinkles and folds. Because JUVÉDERM XC contains lidocaine to improve comfort, an anesthetic may not be needed. However, a doctor may still elect to use a topical anesthetic on the area to be treated before giving the injection. Afterword, the doctor may gently massage the treated area(s). Once treatment is completed, patients can return, with virtually no downtime, to their regular activities. For the first 24 hours after treatment, to reduce the risk of complications, patients should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and alcohol consumption. RESULTS OF JUVÉDERM XC INJECTABLE GEL The results of JUVÉDERM XC are visible immediately after injection; any swelling and bruising, to which ice can be applied, should subside during the next few days. Results can last 6 to 9 months, and, in some cases, up to year. However, according to its manufacturer, "Results from injectable dermal filler vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental 'touch up' treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal correction of . . . wrinkles and folds." RISKS OF JUVÉDERM XC INJECTABLE GEL Although JUVÉDERM XC is considered safe, there is a risk of side effects. They are usually limited to the injection site, and include the following: Redness Pain or tenderness Firmness Swelling Lumps or bumps Bruising Itching Discoloration Infection For customized treatment, Allergan, Inc., offers two types of JUVÉDERM XC: JUVÉDERM Ultra XC, which is suitable for superficial facial lines and folds, and JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus XC, a stronger formulation that is used for deeper facial folds and lines. JUVÉDERM XC is the first HA filler that is FDA-approved for use on people of color.

  • Kybella®

KYBELLA One of the most flattering things of a person’s profile is having a chiseled, defined chin. If you have excess fat under your chin or a double chin, then you may feel a bit self-conscious about your profile and overall appearance. But, unless you want to undergo surgery, you may think that you are stuck with your double chin. One thing that you may not realize is that you have another option to choose from including an injection called Kybella. WHAT IS KYBELLA? Kybella is an FDA approved injectable that is designed to help destroy fat cells under the chin. Once Kybella is injected into the fat under the chin it works to dissolve the fat and leave you with a more defined profile. HOW MANY KYBELLA TREATMENTS WILL I NEED? During your initial consultation with our staff, we will better be able to determine just how many treatments you will need. You may receive a total of six treatments, but on average, patients see visible results in just two to four treatments spaced one month apart. IS KYBELLA RIGHT FOR ME? Typically, Kybella is good for patients who are otherwise healthy and who: • Are bothered by the fat under their chin • Feel like their double chin makes them look older or heavier set than they actually are • Don’t want to go through surgery • Eat well and exercise a lot but can’t get rid of their double chin HOW DOES KYBELLA WORK? The main ingredient in Kybella is synthetic deoxycholic acid which works to naturally breakdown and absorb dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella works to destroy the fat cells and give patients a noticeably thinner profile. HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TREATED WITH KYBELLA? Kybella has been the central focus in over 20 clinical studies in which more than 1600 people were treated. HOW LONG DOES KYBELLA LAST FOR? One of the many benefits of Kybella, is that because it works to actually destroy existing fat cells, results should be permanent and no further treatment may be necessary for maintenance. IS KYBELLA EXPENSIVE? The cost of Kybella varies from provider to provider but if you want to save money on the overall cost of Kybella then enroll in the Brilliant Distinctions Rewards Program which will allow you to earn points on each treatment and redeem them for savings on future treatments. WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF KYBELLA? The most common side effects of Kybella are swelling, pain, numbness, bruising, redness, and hardness around the treatment site. Additionally, some patients experience problems such as ulcers, hair loss, bruising, trouble swallowing, injury to the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial weakness, and necrosis around the injection site. • Restylane®

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved Restylane® injectable gel is a cosmetic "filler" that contains hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance that is found in the body. HA gives volume and elasticity to the skin, but as the body ages, HA levels decrease, resulting in loose skin and wrinkling. When injected, Restylane gel is designed to plump the skin beneath lines and wrinkles, smoothing them out and making them less noticeable. The most common areas for Restylane treatment are the glabellar lines (which run between the eyebrows) and the nasolabial folds (which run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth). Restylane injectable gel is also FDA-approved, for those 21 and older, for enhancing the lips. According to manufacturer Medicis, results can last for up to 6 months, at which point the hyaluronic acid is reabsorbed by the body. BENEFITS OF RESTYLANE INJECTABLE GEL When injected, Restylane gel plumps up glabellar lines and nasolabial folds, making skin appear younger and look smoother. When used for lip enhancement, it makes the lips fuller and gives them more definition. ADVANTAGES OF RESTYLANE INJECTABLE GEL One significant advantage that Restylane injectable gel has over other facial fillers made with hyaluronic acid is that it contains nothing of animal origin. As a result, it does not require a potential user to undergo allergy testing, which can sometimes take weeks. Another advantage is that Restylane injections are performed in-office, usually by a dermatologist, in less than half an hour, and require little-to-no downtime for the patient. SIDE EFFECTS OF RESTYLANE INJECTABLE GEL The most common side effects of Restylane injectable gel are swelling, redness, pain, bruising and tenderness in and around the injection sites. They typically go away within a week. Although considered safe for most patients, Restylane injections carry a risk of infection, bleeding or allergic reaction.

  • Sculptra®

Sculptra® Aesthetic injectable is used to reverse the signs of facial fat loss that occur with aging. By restoring collagen, which decreases as the body ages, it fills out shallow-to-deep wrinkles and folds that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds). It is not appropriate for use in the eye and lip areas. Sculptra Aesthetic's main component is an alpha hydroxy acid called poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is a safe and long-lasting synthetic (artificially created), biocompatible (can be used harmlessly in the body), biodegradable (able to be broken down by the body) substance. PLLA has been used for more than 20 years in many surgical products, including dissolvable sutures and soft-tissue implants. BENEFITS OF SCULPTRA AESTHETIC FACIAL INJECTABLE U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved for the treatment of nasolabial folds, Sculptra Aesthetic is considered safe and effective for most patients. Because it works gradually, patients achieve a more youthful, natural-looking appearance with subtle, yet noticeable, results. Although not FDA-approved to treat them, according to manufacturer Valeant Aesthetics, Sculptra Aesthetic can be used on marionette lines (at the corners of the mouth) and chin wrinkles. Because it contains no animal, human or bacterial components, allergy testing is not necessary prior to treatment. There is little-to-no downtime after receiving Sculptra injections; most patients return to their normal activities immediately. TREATMENT AND RESULTS OF SCULPTRA AESTHETIC FACIAL INJECTABLE Sculptra Aesthetic injections are designed to be a one-time treatment. A patient can have up to 4 injection sessions, which are spread 3 weeks apart. When injected into shallow-to-deep folds and lines, the additional collagen that is produced smooths them out, and adds volume to the skin. Results of Sculptra injections vary but, in a clinical study, their effects were shown to last for up to 2 years in most patients. SIDE EFFECTS OF SCULPTRA AESTHETIC FACIAL INJECTABLE Possible side effects of Sculptra injections include localized bleeding, tenderness, discomfort, redness, bruising and swelling. Side effects usually fade within a few days, although can last longer. According to Valeant Aesthetics, "Other side effects may include small lumps under the skin that are sometimes noticeable when pressing on the treated area. Larger lumps, some with delayed onset with or without inflammation or skin discoloration, have also been reported."

  • PRP Injections

For many years, the medical community has been acutely aware of the body’s natural regenerative qualities. Physicians across all fields, including orthopedics, dentistry, and sports medicine, have implemented protocols that work synergistically with the body. The use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is common for promoting joint recovery and managing degenerative disease. It was only a matter of time before science discovered the value that PRP held for the body’s largest organ: the skin. We are pleased to offer PRP treatments to help our patients address their cosmetic concerns. WHAT IS PRP? PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is an organic substance that has long been advocated for its ability to facilitate tissue regeneration and wound healing. The substance exists in every person’s blood, which makes it safe and convenient. PRP is obtained through a simple blood draw and centrifuge (spinning) process. Centrifugation of the blood separates nutrient-rich platelets from red blood cells and other product. Platelets are valuable because they contain a large number of growth factors. These include epithelial and vascular epithelial growth factors as well as fibroblast and connective tissue growth factors. Each type of growth promotes vital processes such as inflammatory response, blood vessel regeneration, tissue remodeling, and cell proliferation. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PLATELET-RICH PLASMA INJECTIONS? The growth factors contained in platelet-rich plasma are involved in almost every regenerative process in the body. When PRP is injected just beneath the skin, it stimulates collagen proliferation through which a number of benefits occur. PRP injections add volume to areas of the face that have begun to droop or atrophy. The cheeks can be rounded out and under eye hollows that cause dark circles and bags can be softened. Due to ongoing collagen remodeling, PRP injections also promote softer, smoother, tighter skin over time. Injections of platelet-rich plasma are also beneficial because they are safe for all skin types and tones. The organic nature of treatment, using your own blood product, significantly reduces the potential for side effects such as allergic response. HOW DOES PRP WORK FOR AESTHETIC REJUVENATION? Platelet-rich plasma is used in two ways to improve the appearance and overall vitality of the skin. The product may be injected beneath wrinkles, hollows, and areas of deflation and it may also be applied topically in a gentle microneedling procedure. The way that PRP improves texture, volume, and radiance is by inducing numerous regenerative processes. The various growth factors that exist within blood plasma provide essential proteins, electrolytes, hormones, and other nutrients to the skin. Proteins are integral to the formation of fibrin polymer which lays a strong foundation for firm, youthful tissue. Platelets within the plasma naturally respond to injuries in the body, prompting accelerated tissue regeneration through vascular and cellular regrowth. HOW LONG DO PRP INJECTIONS TAKE? PRP treatment with injections takes only slightly longer than an average injectable treatment. We begin with a standard blood draw. If desired, a topical numbing cream can be applied to the treatment area while blood is processed in the centrifuge. This takes just a few minutes. The provider carefully observes the face and may mark areas where injections are recommended. The entire process is typically complete within 15 to 20 minutes. Microneedling with PRP is also brief, taking approximately 30 minutes from start to finish. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PRP PROCEDURE? Patients can resume normal activity immediately following their PRP procedure. Slight redness and swelling should be expected. Some patients notice minor bruising. These side effects typically disappear within the first day after treatment. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS? Patients who undergo microneedling with PRP may notice an immediate boost in the radiance and softness of their skin. PRP injections work beneath the surface to restructure the collagen matrix in superficial tissue, so results from injections alone become more noticeable after a few weeks. As healing mechanisms increase, patients notice improvements such as: Smoother texture due to improved collagen formation. More radiance due to new blood vessel formation. Fresher, younger-looking skin due to the influx of vital nutrients. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF PRP VS. OTHER INJECTABLES? Studies have indicated that patients treated with platelet-rich plasma facials and facelifts find that their results continue to improve over time. Several months after treatment, the effects of cellular regeneration may be even more noticeable than they are right after microneedling or injections. This is because plasma stimulates cellular activity in which collagen and elastin are remodeled.

  • Acne Scars

Acne is a common condition that causes blocked pores, pimples, cysts and other lesions on the skin. While it is most common in teenagers, acne can affect people of all ages, most often appearing on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms. For many patients, once acne lesions clear up or are removed, they leave behind discolorations and indentations on the skin. In many cases, acne can lead to scarring, especially if it is severe. Scars may form after acne has healed and cleared, and may vary from person to person. Some people may have small flat scars that are not very noticeable and others may suffer from more visible and indented scars on the face or affected area. Acne scarring is most often caused by larger acne lesions, such as cysts or nodules, which can swell and rupture, causing a break in the wall of the individual pore. Infected material from the inflamed lesion can spill out through this break and can affect the nearby healthy tissue, leading to the appearance of a scar. Although not harmful, most people are bothered by the unattractive appearance of these scars and seek treatment to remove or significantly reduce their appearance. TYPES OF ACNE SCARS Acne scars can vary in appearance and texture depending on the type and severity of the original acne lesions. Each type of acne scar may require a different type of treatment in order to repair the damaged areas of the skin and produce a smooth, clear appearance. ATROPHIC SCARS Atrophic scars develop when there is a loss of tissue. Common types of atrophic scars include ice pick scars and boxcar scars. Ice pick scars are narrow indentations that form deep within the layers of the skin, creating an appearance that the skin has been punctured with an icepick. Boxcar scars are round depressions in the skin similar to chickenpox scars, which may be superficial or deep, depending on the severity of the pimple. HYPERTROPHIC SCARS Hypertrophic scars are caused when the body produces too much collagen as acne wounds heal, resulting in excessive amounts of raised tissue on the skin's surface. Also known as a rolling scars, hypertrophic scars create a wave-like appearance in the skin as a result of bands of tissue that develop deep within the skin and pull the epidermis down in certain spots. ACNE SCAR TREATMENT Treatment for acne scars depends on the type and severity of scarring, as well as each patient's individual skin and amount of correction desired. Treatment options may include: Tissue fillers to fill in depressed scars for a smoother appearance Dermabrasion to remove surface scars or lessen the appearance of deeper scars Laser treatments to burn away the skin's surface layer and produce new skin cells Punch excision surgery to remove indented scars which may include a skin graft For many patients, a combination of treatments may be most effective in improving the appearance of acne scars. Treating acne scars is often a complex process that sometimes involves several different treatments. PREVENTING ACNE SCARS The most effective way to prevent acne scars from developing is to stop the lesions that lead to scarring from forming. It is also important for patients to avoid picking or popping active lesions, as this can lead to infection and increase the risk of scarring. Picking at scabs should also be avoided to allow natural healing to occur without interruption. Sun exposure can lead to further damage of the skin and may delay healing of scars and lesions, and should be avoided as much as possible to maintain the health of the skin. Some patients are naturally prone to developing scars from acne and will not be able to prevent these scars from occurring. Fortunately, there are many treatments available to reduce the appearance of acne scars and revitalize the skin.

  • Chemical Peels

Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin to make skin smoother, reduce scarring and remove blemishes. Ranging from mild to strong, there are three types of chemical peels: alphahydroxy acid (AHA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and phenol. The strength of each peel is tailored to the patient. Peels can be combined with other procedures, such as facelifts, for additional improvement to skin. Chemical peels may be covered by insurance if they are performed for medical rather than cosmetic reasons. Chemical peels are performed in a plastic surgeon's or dermatologist's office, or an outpatient surgical center. Anesthesia is not required because TCA and phenol have anesthetic properties, and AHA produces only a slight stinging. CHEMICAL PEEL PROCEDURE During a TCA or phenol peel, the skin is cleansed and the solution is applied, which may cause a brief stinging sensation. Petroleum jelly or a waterproof adhesive tape may be put on the skin following a phenol peel. During an AHA peel, the skin is cleansed and the solution applied; there is no need for post-peel ointment or covering. SIDE EFFECTS OF CHEMICAL PEELS A phenol or TCA peel can result in tingling or throbbing, reddened skin, a crust or scab, and significant swelling that lasts, depending on the strength of the peel used, about a week. With a phenol peel, eyes may be swollen shut at first, and the patient may be put on a liquid diet and advised to keep talking to a minimum. Any tape used is removed after a day or two. AHA peels can cause temporary stinging, redness and irritation, as well as flaking or crusting. After a chemical peel, it is essential that the skin be protected from the sun.

Long term and repeated exposure to sunlight, especially ultraviolet light, can cause a variety of cosmetic and medical problems related to the skin, commonly referred to as sun damage. Sun damage can affect any area of the skin as a result of excessive exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. Sun damage most commonly occurs on the face, hands and arms, and may lead to sun spots, age spots, rough skin and wrinkles. Years of sun exposure can also lead to premature aging and skin cancer. Some individuals may notice skin lesions that are a form of actinic keratosis, which is is a precancerous skin condition that develops from years of sun exposure. The best treatment against sun damage is preventing it from occurring in the first place. It is important to wear sunscreen on a daily basis and avoid excessive exposure to the sun, especially during mid-day hours when the sun is strongest. Additional ways to prevent sun damage include: Always wear sun screen with an SPF of at least 15 Wear a hat in the sun Wear long sleeves and long pants Avoid tanning beds and salons Once sun damage has occurred, there are options available to cosmetically improve damage that has already been suffered. Injectable fillers such as collagen help to fill out lines and wrinkles to give the skin a fuller, smoother look and feel. Phototherapy can reduce the appearance of uneven pigmentation and laser treatments may also be effective for these conditions. Chemical peels and microdermabrasion soften and rejuvenate the skin by removing old and dead layers of skin cells. This helps to promote new growth and enhanced texture of the skin. resulting in a noticeable renewal of the skin. Individuals that notice any suspicious growths or skin patches should immediately consult with a doctor, as early detection is extremely important in treating any forms of skin cancer that may have developed as a result of sun damage.
